Chem Film

Chemical film coating is also referred to as Chem Film or chromate conversion coating, is a dip process for coating aluminum with a chromium-based compound. It offers excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance and is also an excellent primer coat for paint or other organic coatings. It is thinner than anodic coatings and is hardly competitive with anodizing for abrasion and wear resistance. Chemical films are also electrically conductive, unlike anodizing.

Chem film coating produces a finish which:

  1. protects from corrosion;
  2. assures good paint adhesion; and
  3. conducts electricity.

The United States military spec for chemical films and chemical film materials for aluminum alloys is Mil-C-5541E. Elite Metal Finishing can also provide Rohs Compliant chromate conversion coating.
